Circa 1880
Lovely, Victorian long guard chain. Features a thick trace link chain with faceted gold balls & paper clip links. Fastens with a bolt ring clasp & can be wrapped round the neck at least three times or worn as a bracelet stack wrapped several times around the wrist.
Long guard chains were first worn by women in the early 1800s. They were long and light weight gold or silver chains- draped over the shoulders and caught at the waist with a watch hook or tucked under a belt or in a watch pocket. Depending on their use, such chains were also called ‘watch chains’ or ‘muff chains’.
Measures approx length 55 Inches.
Trace chain measures approx 2.2mm thickness.
Facted balls approx 5.3mm width.
Weight 16.5g
