This necklace is a beautiful 'Marseille Necklace' made of hollow gold balls strung together, with a lovely aged patina. It is an antique 14ct gold necklace from the 1920s. The tradition of this necklace dates back to the 18th century when dealers in Marseille kept their gold in the form of balls around their necks. In the 19th century, the custom spread among the bourgeoisie, and women from Marseilles meeting outside Marseille recognised themselves by wearing the Marseille necklace.
The necklace measures approximately length 15 Inches in length and a width of 4.9mm
